I am interested in the Le Clean for use as a preamp for my Torpedo CAB M pedal. Pricey but being dual channel makes it a bit more reasonable when I think of it as 2 pedals. I was hoping someone would post about having one and their experience(s) with it.
@Crossroads — if you get one, please post your comments, and I’ll do likewise.

Pretty cool, no experience but, I like it.

So I ordered an open box on Reverb from Two Note (the manufacturer).
They agreed to my offer on Monday and despite two messages, the unit has not shipped and I am receiving no responses to my messages.
I wonder if they are rethinking the price, but frankly they should have done that or countered, instead of accepting my offer
Wednesday is day 3, and if they have not responded I guess I will have no recourse but to cancel.
Usually when I order something on Reverb it ships next day, or at least they communicate with you.

So is @TwoNotesSolo moonlighting in the pedal biz? «Le Clean» sounds French to me!

That’s rather frustrating.
I’ve had a few similar dealings with manufactures and my assessment is they are not focused on consumer direct sales.
Hang in there.

So update on this. I was annoyed 3 days after I paid without response. but I managed to hold back my usual sarcasm, and respectfully explained that I had paid for this item 3 days ago, had sent 5 messages, received no response, and if there was a problem please contact me.
I sent a message to Reverb Wednesday night aching them to contact the seller. I sent the same message to the seller.
Thursday morning it shipped.
@GeeDub I went with a Le crunch, which has more of Brit sound. I now see open boxes of the crunch. @ $220 on Reverb. It arrives Monday
The crazy German guy did a 4 part review of all 4 Le boxes including Le Bass for you bottom feeders.

Yes, I’ve seen those yt vids. However, I always take them with a grain of salt when it appears the poster/reviewer has received the items free, for review purposes and I am reluctant to believe there is no bias involved.

I just use them for informational purposes to see the features.
You can’t even trust the tones unless they tell you their signal chain. Even then just because it works for them, doesn’t mean it will for you.
Seems like anytime anyone gets something for free they have to love it, or they won’t get any more stuff for free.

@Crossroads,
Assuming you have received your Le Crunch, can we have a report?
Thanks.

Yeah so I purchased a Helix back in Dec, and while the moderate tones were fine, the high gain tones left me flat, and sounded digital to me. So I hooked up an old Tube King pedal to try and add tube compression to the mix to warm it up. It worked pretty good.
I figured with 10 years of advances and MIDI in and out. the La crunch would be a better fit. With two channels and a 2 channel cascade I would have 4 workable tube tones. I could tie to different patches via MIDI in the Helix.
With channel 1 and mild gain the La Crunch made the Helix sound better, not any better than the Tube King though. When I tried channel 2 and cascade mode, the digital stuff got worse and high gain was creating a lot of noise. I sent a message saying I wanted to return it.
I got a return message asking if I would be willing to call and discuss how I was using it. I called and the guy was very nice and said of course I can return it, but could I try using it in in the effects loop instead of in front of an amp . We talked for a while, he helpful.
I explained the way I was using it in the Helix was paramount to an FX loop, but after tonight I am not so sure the Helix has really separated the pre and power amps the way they did in the pod series. It seems to me that the amps have pre amp distortion in them.
So I pulled out my old Traynor YVC80 4X10 and ran the Tube King pedal through the effects loop, and it sounded great. Ran the La Crunch and channel 1 sounded OK, but not as good as the Tube King.o.
But when I switched to channel 2 I heard harsh digital distortion on both channel 2 and the cascade (fusion mode), when I tried to push it. So though it advertises a 200 volt 12 AX7 it seems to me that there is not a lot going on in the tube circuit in channel 2. The lack of any radiant heat helps to confirm that. While you can’t burn yourself on the Tube King pedal you can definitely feel the warmth.
So while it may work for some warmth, when pusshed, it’s not for me. But I appreciate the customer service, and I’ll probably record some samples for him.

Interesting read. I have often wondered why we don’t see more tube based pedals on the current market, outside of Kingsley and a few others. I guess it comes down to size constraints and power requirements to give a preamp tube enough juice to do its thing. It appears that some of those that are available now do not provide the tube(s) with enough dc current to provide the user with true preamp tube goodness. Keep in mind this is just my uneducated opinion. I know from much reading that the Kingsley products work as advertised. However, it appears, more so after your report, that the Le Preamp series of pedals do not push enough current through the tube to provide the tones I would prefer. I definitely would expect to feel quite a bit of warmth/heat radiating from the tube, just like in an amp. It should be no different, imho.
Thanks for saving me some $.

I spoke with Simon last week, on the waiting list for a Jester, probably a custom. I have 10 months to figure it out.
After a year of searching I can’t find anything that sounds better to me than Bias Amp 2, except possibly the Kemper and those Kingsley pedals.
Kingsley has Kemper profiles now, so if they fix the firmware on the Kemper stage that may be the next test.
I think the Jester into this Bastion 40 profile would sound sweet.

Oh and there’s the Synergy but that loos like it will get expensive real quick.

There’s just soooooooooo much stuff out there
My theory that «everything effects everything» makes it impossible to get a true evaluation of anything without plugging it in to your own rig.

Designed to deliver the sort of tones associated with Fender amps, the pedal outputs pristine clean tone from channel A.
It’s a sweet sound that you can focus in nicely with the bass and treble knobs and is just crying out for a touch of spring reverb.
The in-built switchable speaker sim does a decent tone-shaping job for headphone monitoring or direct recording, but it doesn’t have the range or complexity of the IR-based Torpedo C.A.B. Channel B cranks things for a nice bit of natural-sounding breakup, while both channels together in Cold fusion mode offers some useful blends — clean with a bit of grit, or raunch with clarity.
Now, it may be named Le Clean, but the pedal can get a bit dirty, too, in Hot Fusion mode, as channel A boosts channel B and can come across like a blackface Deluxe turned all the way up with careful juxtaposition of gain and Fusion knobs.
Trevor Curwen has played guitar for several decades – he’s also mimed it on the UK’s Top of the Pops. Much of his working life, though, has been spent behind the mixing desk, during which time he has built up a solid collection of the guitars, amps and pedals needed to cover just about any studio session. He writes pedal reviews for Guitarist and has contributed to Total Guitar, MusicRadar and Future Music among others.
How about a scary story since we’re so close to Halloween?
There once was a guitar player named Jerry. Creativity struck, but as Jerry reached for his amp’s power switch, he saw a clock on the wall that read 12:00am. He put his guitar away, and when he woke up in the morning his idea was gone forever.
Since I don’t always have the luxury of loud, I wanted to try the Le Clean by the French company Two Notes with my home recording setup. While the pedal works for a slew of applications (D.I. box, pre-amp, headphone amp, overdrive/boost pedal, effects loop), my main interest was to see if it could give my direct recordings a little tube magic when I can’t crank an amp.
Le Clean is one of four different tube preamps from the Le Preamp series. Each preamp has two channels plus Hot and Cold Fusion mode which blends the two channels together for two additional tones.
Channel A is as simple as it gets. The controls are Gain, Volume, Bass and Treble. It reminds me of a no nonsense blackface Fender Bassman.
Channel B gets a bit more complex. The common controls are Gain, Sweep (works with Mid), Volume, Bass, Mid and Treble. Also included in Channel B is the Hot/Cold switch and Fusion knob. These come into play only when you use Fusion mode.
Fusion mode is when both channels are combined. There are two ways to do this. Cold Fusion mode puts both channels in parallel, which adds in the high end clarity that often gets lost in a distorted sound. Hot Fusion mode cascades the two channels making it great to boost your volume for solos.

Clip 1: Here’s a Strat with no amp, just the D.I. out with the Speaker Simulation engaged. I start off clean in Channel A then switch over to Channel B for a little overdrive. The Speaker Simulation gave the audio just enough depth that I didn’t miss a lack of reverb or room sound.
Clip 2: To show off Hot and Cold Fusion modes, I played a Fender American Professional series Telecaster through a Fender Blues Junior amp and ran the Le Clean as you would any overdrive pedal. The rhythm guitar part I have the Le Clean set to Cold Fusion and for the lead part I switch over to Hot Fusion.
Clip 3: As a final test, I had to know if the Le Clean could help tame the infamous brittle tone of a direct acoustic guitar. While it took some fine tuning (the EQ is very sensitive) here’s how my Tacoma acoustic sounds straight into the Le Clean.

Anybody try the Two Notes Le Clean preamp?
I came across the le clean preamp stompbox during one of my web searches. Has anyone tried one for pedal steel? The price ($299 at sweetwater) is low for a preamp but high for a stompbox. I use a powered monitor (qsc) with my eleven rack but a smaller device is appealing.

I bit the bullet and bought one. In function it is similar to the Seymour Duncan Twin Tube pedal (discontinued). I have missed the Twin Tube since it died and have looked for a similar device. Well, Here it is. The tube runs at 200 volts. The Le Clean has two channels (think clean and drive) which can be used individually or together. When used together, it can be serial or parallel.
The clean channel has gain, volume, bass, and treble for controls. I found it very easy to get a «sweet» tube sound with the gain around 12 o’clock. The transition to a thicker sounds happens very quickly above 12.
The drive channel has gain, volume, Bass, Mid with Mid Sweep and Treble. It crosses into thick and driven much sooner the the clean channel.
I ran the balanced DI out into my QSC K10 and the sound is clean and quiet without signal. There is a slight bottom of white noise which is consistent with my tube amp experience.
Le Clean has an effects loop for adding reverb, delay, etc. It also has midi in and out to be controlled and to control externally. The headphone jack and the DI out have speaker simulation available (one model only). Two Notes offers speaker simulation plug-ins to be used by your favorite DAW.
$299 for this unit was more than I wanted to spend on a preamp pedal but I now consider it well spent. I hope to get a lot of miles from this unit.

Been looking at this… now that the newness has worn off, do you still see the unit as good investment?

This unit far exceeds my expectations. Pick response allows me to go from clean and sweet to full and crunchy. I have two pickups with volume pot for each pickup. I get an excellent range of sounds just by adjusting the «bridge» pickup against the «neck» pickup. My E-B-E-G# power chords leave me grinning. The clarity of the note separation has me exploring «HugheyLand» which I have always avoided before.
I used the headphone jack the other morning with its speaker emulation and I can truly say that I have never heard my guitar sound so good.I have been using the «A» channel with the bass, treble, and volume at 12 o’clock and the gain at 1 o’clock. I use the XLR direct output to connect to my QSC K10. The direct out also has the option of using the speaker emulation which I leave on all the time.
I put my Boss RV-5 into the effects loop and it works seamlessly.
Here is my signal path: Alumitone pickups to 500K pots to Peterson classic strobo-stomp pedal to Le Clean to headphones or QSC K10. The Boss RV-5 runs parallel in the effects loop.
Two Notes has a hardware unit that offers a variety of speaker emulation and based upon the sound I get from my unit with its built-in speaker emulation, I think that they «get it» as far as providing the equipment that a modern guitarist needs.
All this is subjective but my experience has been positive. I hope that the unit continues to operate correctly for a long time to come.

I have posted some noodling to demonstrate my guitar without the Le Clean and then with the Le Clean. The first part of each section is rhythmic and the second is more melodic. Please ignore the clams. I have not been playing pedal steel for over two years and am just getting back into it. I just wanted to give interested folks some idea of what the Le Clean sounds like with my settings which are: the bass and treble at 12 o’clock, volume at 1 o’clock and the gain at 11 o’clock. My signal path is: Alumitone pickups to 500K pots to Peterson classic strobo-stomp pedal to Le Clean to steinberg UR44 USB interface to Presonus Studio One 3 pro.

I’d like to point out that the Le Clean acts like a classic tube amp. That is, it helps to have a volume control on your guitar to adjust the nuances of the pick response. I know it is stating the obvious but I think anyone trying this preamp would have a tougher time of getting «their sound» without a volume pot in front of it.
