Джо Бонамасса – феномен нашего времени! Ему всего 38 лет, а он уже записал более двадцати студийных работ, двенадцать из которых — собственные альбомы. И уникальность его не в количестве дисков, а в блистательном продолжении блюз-роковых традиций сейчас, в нашем времени, в век, когда стала забываться исконно подлинная музыка. Свежая пластинка Бонамассы «Blues Of Desperation» как глоток свежего воздуха, именно она возвращает во времена культа рок-гитары.
Между тем главное отличие Джо Бонамассы от всех коллег по жанру – его музыка не какой-то олдскульный блюз, а отлично сделанные коммерческие композиции, где так высоко ценится не только превосходное качество и аранжировки, а яркая мелодичность каждого трека. И в этом показателе американец прибавляет от альбома к альбому, мастерски чередуя острые зажигательные номера, с «вкусно» оформленными размеренными тактами. И как много значит работа мудрого продюсера – уже устоявшийся тандем с легендарным Кевином Ширли (с которым записали свои лучшие работы Journey и Iron Maiden) выдал блистательный альбом всего за 5 дней работы в студии Grand Victor Sound (ранее известную как RCA Studio A).
Пестрят нарочитой грубостью и неотесанностью две стартовые композиции «This Train» и «Mountain Climbing». Выверенная своей ритмикой и тонким вибрато «Drive» — являет собой главный хит пластинки, отправляя слушателя в эдакое дорожное приключение по бесконечным хайвеям с остановками в придорожных забегаловках – идеально сбалансированный трек, где и так изумительно сплетены голос и аранжировка. Одноименная песня альбома «Blues Of Desperation» запросто может выступить как обрамление бескомпромиссному мужскому парфюму – истинное альтер-эго альфа-самца. Не лишена простого изящества «The Valley Runs Low», «How Deep This River Runs» увлекательная своей безудержной импровизацией, «вульгарна» джазовой трубой (привет «Птахе») дорожка «Livin’ Easy». Завершающий блюзовый стандарт «What I’ve Known For A Very Long Time» буквально гипнотизирует магией фирменной «распасовки» ударных, утопающих в обволакивающем голосе и гитаре Джо (что почти одно и то же).
Бонамасса уверенно выдает суперальбом за альбомом, неутомимо выводя фирменный звук до запредельного уровня. О нем можно смело говорить, как о феноменальной личности в истории музыки, во многом потому, что он не почивает на лаврах, а продолжает идти вперед, думая о развитии своего творчества через призму актуальности времени.

Знаменитый блюз-рокер Джо Бонамасса не заставил долго ждать нового альбома своих поклонников. Последнее время гитарист стабильно выпускает по одному сольнику раз в два года, а между тем участвует еще в куче проектов. Что интересно, всюду успевает, держа планку качество высоко над головой.
Новая работа музыканта называется Blues Of Desperation и начинается с ритмичной, заводной песни про поезд «This Train» с использованием слайда и прочей блюзовой мишуры, продолжается спокойной балладистой «Drive» и заканчивается размеренной блюзовой и нежной «What I’ve Know for a Very Long Time». Джо как и всегда старается угодить как роковой, так и блюзовой публике, хотя второй все же больше.
Так же музыкант не забывает и про гитаристов, поэтому его музыка частенько пестрит красивыми пассажами и мелодическими гитарными оборотами. Про технику исполнения Бонамассы уже многое сказано. Я просто повторюсь, Джо великолепно владеет инструментом. С точки зрения техники он один из лучших гитаристов на Земле, на мой взгляд.
При этом музыкант в рамках Blues Of Desperation не пытается выпячивать сугубо техническое мастерство, стараясь соблюсти баланс. Поэтому даже в гитарных соло можно услышать очень органичное сплетение техник, что делает игру Бонамассы разнообразной и эстетически красивой. Не говоря уже о теплом ламповом звуке, который он всегда умело накручивает на своем оборудовании. Приятно слушать как овердрайв в рок-песнях, так и слегка подгруженные гитарные партии в блюзовых с вкраплением ряда других эффектов, делающих этот диск еще более разнообразным.
Особый вклад в альбом делает спокойная и достаточно позитивная «The Valley Runs Low», выполненная на акустической гитаре с мощным колоритным басом, что заполняет пространство микса низким звуком, пока девушки хором поют милые мелодические последовательности, покуда Джо ведет композицию своим харизматичным голосом к красивому завершению.
Бонамасса записал хороший, добротный диск, за который не стыдно. Слушайте на здоровье.

Hot blues Joe Bonamassa «Blues Of Desperation» 201628.03.2016 Ошеломляющий, быстрый, мощный, виртуозный. Таков блюзрок господина Бонамасы до трека № 6, до «песни для девочек», озаглавленной «The Valley Runs Low». Песня милая, просто поп-номер, который и должен, наверно, по замыслу Джо-создателя, выпадать из коллекции явно «тяжелого блюза». Вернее дать сигнал к антракту. Вторая часть пластинки не столь монолитна стилистически. После «антракта» следует занятный, с перекатывающимся рисунком ритма, с огрызающейся фразами гитарой, БЛЮЗ. Кстати, парадоксально перекликающийся со стилем Би Би, хотя соло здесь порхающей скоростью скорее намекает на Элвина Ли. Другое произведение, достойное, отдельного риспекта, — Livin’ Easy, акустический блюз, навеянный Новым Орлеаном. Кстати, высвечивающий превосходную партию пианиста и воющий где-то под потолком в пустоте, словно Змей-Горыныч, тенор-саксофон. Оба инструмента эффектно преследуют солиста на протяжении всей песни как голодные волки добычу. Завершает отменную вторую коллекцию Джо — 11 авторских номеров — «блюз без дураков» и с дудками What I’ve Know For A Very Long Time. Превосходно записанный в небольшом клубе блюзовый сет. Каждый аккорд, каждая нота звучат отчетливо, тепло. Про альбом не скажешь избитое «зажигает» — у элегантного драйва двигатель в ином, более тонком ключе. Пара «горячих финских парней» записала песни Эдди, звучит коллекция весьма недурно. Будучи по призванию рассказчиком-шоуменом, снискавшим культовый статус живыми гигами, Джеймс часто использовал гармонику «в контексте» своих песен-историй. Проще говоря, пел много слов-куплетов, а солировал по мере надобности — как того требовала «драматургия представлений. Рекомендовать альбом поклонникам реального блюза BN не отважился бы. Однако место ему Billboard blues albums гарантировано. В блюзе было в прошлом немало первоклассных певиц и даже «королев». Для чикагского стиля непререкаема миссис Тейлор — Queen Of The Blues, Koko Taylor. Alligator Records напомнил миру о своей козырной исполнительнице, умершей в 2009, выжимкой из ее карьеры. Having settled for ‘Blues Of Desperation’ rather than ‘Blues and Desperation’, Joe Bonamassa transforms the inherent edge of his album title into a powerhouse record that showcases some of his best recorded moments in recent times.
He actually saves his most climactic solo to rescue the overwrought blues ballad ‘No Good Place For The Lonely’, which overcomes a horrible synth fill and overbearing faux strings to achieve an unlikely triumph.
‘Blues Of Desperation’ lives up to its name in a positive way, as it sounds like the work of a performer taken out of his comfort zone and pushed to a new high.
The album reinforces Joe’s own style through self penned songs, while harnessing some of his most fiery solos in recent times. As a guitarist, Joe proudly stands at the top of his own mountain to survey the great beyond, while refusing to believe that’s all there is.
Recorded as a power quartet (although there are some significant keyboard parts), the main inspiration behind the album appears to be producer Kevin Shirley’s fascination with Led Zeppelin style bombast. To that end he’s recruited a second drummer Greg Morrow and added bv’s to smooth out the jagged edges.
Look no further than the bone crunching riffs of ‘Mountain Climbing’ as the first of several examples of a flashback to the early 70’s, though newer fans will doubtless rejoice in Joe’s fiery attack, as his solo slashes through the enveloping backing track.
Leading into this album Joe says he wanted to do explore new horizons in the blues. And he does so, on an album that tempers a big shoulders rock approach with heartfelt blues sensibilities.
The opening ‘This Train’ uses the first of two familiar train metaphors, the former being a slide-led opus on which he pushes his vocal to the limit to bring gravitas to some workaday lyrics, as his incendiary soloing seals the deal. ‘Distant Lonesome Train’ employs a pungent drum pattern, before he stretches out in a stellar display of guitar mastery, nailed by big wall of sound and stereo panning.
He digs deep for the equally intense and suitably titled ‘How Deep This River Runs’, with a coruscating solo that reflects the depths of the ensemble playing.
The sourly titled ‘You Left Me Nothin’ But The Bill And The Blues’ actually gives the album a lift, via a tension building piano-led bridge, which is resolved by two succinct solos with a gnawing tone.
Since becoming a national Top 10 chart topper with ‘Sloe Gin’, Joe has been treading a delicate line between staying innovative, while satisfying fans expectations.
He’s also become a barometer for just how far a blues rock artist can go while staying loyal to his blues calling. In that context, the title track answers a lot of questions, with its bold sonic experimentation, wild slide guitar and additional Zeppelin thrust.
But producer Shirley knows his pupil well, as half way through the song Joe’s solo takes off like a jet plane in a blaze of heavy guitar-driven intensity over deft electronics and an eerie drop down.
The sultry groove and filmic tremolo motif of ‘Drive’ emphasises the album’s light and shade and essential flow, while also showcasing the more reflective side of Joe’s song writing. The similarly soulful ‘The Valley Runs Low’ is Glen Clarke/Delbert McClinton territory, with one eye on the radio, while he leans into the late night horn-led acoustic groove of Livin’ Easy.’
The album is book ended by the horn-led slow blues and suitably titled ‘What I’ve Known For A Very Long Time’ which from a subjective viewpoint could be interpreted as an acknowledgement of Bonamassa’s mastery of the blues.
He may never be the kind of vocalist or lyricist who readily lays bare his true emotions, but his guitar playing comes from the deepest of places that only a blues artist could hope to discover. ****½
